Eleanor, Bryan, Russell:
I would like to express my deepest and heartfelt regrets. First for your loss and secondly, that I was unable to make it there for Mickey’s service as I did for his brother Bill’s. Not a night has gone by since I heard of his passing that I didn’t think of just how much he affected my life all those years ago.
I remembered:
He was a grown man who was a big kid
He was always my favorite cousin
We had road trips to and from D.C.
His rounded fingernails fascinated me as a child
His big hearty laugh – he would crack up or joke about the slightest thing
He blew his “Kool” brand cigarette smoke into my glass jar of honey bees & we shook it up to see what would happen to them
We had never seen a live lobster until he chased us around the house with one
I remembered that his birthday was on the fourth of July
He loved to watch cartoons
He assisted me in planning and executing my two-phased escape from an abusive relationship.
And as my eyes well-up looking at his photo;
I realized he was my friend.
I wish I had made an opportunity to tell him so.
