Well Aunt Nita, I have such wonderful memories from the times I spent with you. You were only eight years older than me so we could share a lot of wisdom with each other. Uncle Jay taught me how to really drive a car on the freeway when I was 15 years old in Sacramento. And then the time I stayed with you all for two weeks one summer when Leslie was still a baby. I experienced fried egg sandwiches for the first time which I fell in love with and like everyone says, those fried chicken dinners were so good!
I am so glad I was able to visit with Nita and Jay back in 2004 in El Paso during the week of James Collins passing. We were able to catch up on many missing years not seeing each other. I loved her stories and I had hoped to visit her in South Carolina this next year, but it looks like we will meet again up yonder. Love you Aunt Nita and happy trails to you until we meet again!

My mom, Mary, married Aunt Nita’s little brother Fussy Paul. I’ll never forget all the stories she told about raising her bratty little brother. She says she carried him everywhere and helped spoil him rotten. I was 6 years old when I joined the Paul family and my new grandmother (mammaw) accepted me and treated me just like all her other grandkids. So did Aunt Nita. Both of those great ladies taught me so much about the Southern way to do things. Setting a table for 15 around a table for 8. Making the best chicken fried steak, pinto beans, and homemade biscuits. Cleaning the kitchen together after dinner making sure to put every single dish and pot away. I loved the stories Aunt Nita told about all her shenanigans when she was younger. She had quite a fun filled life with Uncle Jay, traveling in their Winnebago, enjoying restaurants, craft fairs, and blue grass music. I’ll miss her wonderful belly laughs and her great sense of humor. I always knew she loved me and wanted the best for all her children, nieces and nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved us all and I’m a better person because of her.

I remember my dad taking us on multiple summer trips to California. And a highlight was always going to stay with you all. My favorite last memory of you dad and mom was around 1983 in Ruidoso,NM. I ran into dad at a supply house and he invited Kyta, wife at the time, and I to where they were staying on a job site where dad was completing 5 cabins. Oh it was fun . Camp fire going on outside and smell of pine trees everywhere. Then dad was all excited and had us go inside their trailer where dad pulled his guitar out. He said he’d been learning how to play bluegrass. Then he proceeded to jam out some bluegrass runs that were so awesome. I have goosebumps just thinking about it. Then Kyta invited them over to our little cabin for dinner. We were so nervous because your mom was a cook from hell. Lol. Needless to say, mom just raved how good the meal was as we talked and talked. I’ve always loved them but never like I did at that moment. I moved to New Mexico after trying to save a family business , only to file bankruptcy. Dad told me he was proud of my efforts and said I did what a son was supposed to do for a father. I teared up because nobody , not even to this day, ever told me that. . Mom walked up and gave me a big hug and said she loved me. Then dad walked up a hugged me too. We were both keeping as far from IRS at the time in the mountains of NM. They left a few weeks later. Your mom didn’t waste an ‘I love you’ on anybody she didn’t mean to nor did I never forget that day I had the chance to say thank you and I loved them too. Mom and dad validated me being a good guy and they changed my life for the better. Nita, I will always love you and I will never forget my uncle and aunt

I first met Nita when I was 3 years old in El Paso and she was married to my mothers Youngest brother J.E. she scared the heck out of me! I grew to love her very much and when I moved to California, I remember all those great family chicken fried dinners at her house, lots of laughing, and fun Music when J.E. and my brother would get the guitars out and play. What great memories. I am thankful I got to visit her in South Carolina in 2020 and get a taste of her stories again. She will be missed by all. Love to Aunt Nita. Rest is peace.

I grew up with Nita and J.E. living next door to us in Lakewood, Ca. Then our families all moved to Orange. My mom Nadine and her were best friends. As a little girl I remember if we did anything wrong at her house we'd get a spanking and by the time we'd get home she'd had already called our mom and then we got another spanking, and vise versa. Pretty sure I learned my lesson early on but not my brothers. Lol. I just remember her as a no nonsense woman with a heart of gold. She truly loved all us kids. And there was always a bunch of them at her house.
She taught me the proper way to make sweet tea.
As teenagers we had a lot of fun with her.
I also remember about 15 years ago I had called her and she apologized to me for being so mean to us kids. I reassured her we didnt think she was mean. She was just Nita..You just didn't mess up around her. That's all. The last time I saw her was in El Paso. Along time ago. For many many years we kept in touch by mail, Christmas cards etc. She was a big part of our lives when we were kids, teenagers and young adults. I may have not seen her for many years but we talked about her often. Memories, you know. This picture is how I really remember her. I know in my mothers albums I'm sure theres tons of pictures I can share with Mike and Lajay.
Thanks for all the lessons you taught me Nita.. especially the tea. Now you, mom and Junita can once again play cards.❤

Grandma, we will miss you so much. We have so many fun memories of you over the years. Going to craft shows together, sleepovers at mammaw's house, camping in the Winnebago with you and grandpa, to name a few. In more recent years we spent time in Nevada, Washington and South Carolina celebrating birthdays and Christmas's together. You were the Best great grandma to Zach. He loved seeing you and visiting and being your birthday buddy! Until we meet again. Take care and tell grandpa hello for us. You will forever be in our thoughts and hearts.

Loved “When I was in 2nd grade I was madly in love with Ginger from Gilligan's Island. Nita and J.E. were taking a family outing to Hollywood for I think Anitra's birthday. I told Aunt Nita if you see Ginger get her autograph for me. When they returned that evening, I got my autograph...although I'm sure it didn't come from Ginger. Aunt Nita would go above and beyond to put a smile on your face. Love you much Aunt Nita.
I'm sure her and Uncle J.E. and my parents Bob and Juanita are at a bluegrass festival right now stompin their feet.”

Nita was quite the character. She loved to tease and she loved to banter especially when she knew she could rile you up. Always in good fun! I will miss walking in and seeing her in her chair usually with a good book and a big smile. Rest In Peace Nita.
