I can't describe how sad this news is to me.
I went to MBHS at different times (moved around a lot) between '81 and '84. I took Mr. Edlin's Physical Science, Chemistry and Physics classes. I also served as a teacher's aid in Chemistry.
He had a keen wit and was intelligent but was also very kind man unless you didn't study for the exams. In that case, he could be stern, but it was all in the interest of teaching the material.
Some memories:
- Before every test, he would have a contest for extra credit between sides of the room. Most of us didn't study, but we fought HARD to get the bonus points.
- One day he let ME lead the class pre-exam quiz; that was a blast. I called poor Dino Pyatt "Dunno" because that was always his answer. Big laugh.
- He showed my physics class static electricity with a Van De Graaff generator, very fun.
- He showed me a lot about magnetism for a presentation with metal filings suspended in a case of viscous fluid, parts of which I remember to this day (electron domains in ferrous metals, etc.).
- He got between two girls fighting one day and they both turned on him with nails out. I LOL every time I think about that.
- He told my parents kind things about me during an Open House evening.
- One girl called him "Dude," like, "Come on, dude!" (it WAS the '80s). He NEVER let her live that down.
- Too many more to list here.
I admired Mr. Edlin, and loved his classes. I am so sorry to learn he has passed away.

Trina, I am so sorry for your loss. I don’t remember all of my teachers, but Mr. Edlin you could never forget! One time your dad retrieved a note that Traci Botts and I were passing back and forth. He thought the whole class needed needed to hear what was in that note,. He read it like a commentator would, though embarrassed he had the whole class laughing. Tracy and I, at that time, called each other “Vern” and he just couldn’t get over it, so from that Point on I was no longer Andrea but “Vern”. I sit here and laugh as I think of it now. You were your dad’s world and he will continue to shine his light down on you,

Trina so sorry to here about your Dad. I know he meant the world to you and for those of us who grew up with you and knew your Dad, he was certainly one of a kind! He single handedly made my childhood memories unforgetable with the neverending stream of comp Pavilion ride tickets. What more could a kid ask for? Those years were so much fun! I'll always remember the experiences in his classroom too and the manner in which he handled his students. And of course, the secret mission to pull one over on him by "finding" his test answer sheets was one of the most memorable moments of my life LOL! I'm sure Judd, Benson and John will never forget that either. Sending love and prayers your way, God Bless.

I graduated from Glendale High School with James in 1961. I rode the school bus with him for 4 years. He was one of the smartest and funniest guys there. His humor carried on to our 50th class reunion several years ago. We were riding on a float in the Glendale homecoming festival and he was so sweet to let us put an Elvis costume on him. He was the high light of our float and our weekend . I will always have good memories. My sympathy to his daughter and fiance and Granddog. The world was certainly a better place because of James.

Mr. Edlin’s class was proof that some of the most difficult subjects can be the most rewarding. His personality alone made him one of the most memorable teachers I have ever had. He was one of a kind! When I heard the sad news this morning, I told my husband about it and shared some great memories about life in his classroom. Trina, you have my sympathy and I wish your family peace and strength.

Mr. Edlin was a real GEM of MBHS. I remember his chemistry class like it was yesterday. I am so sad to hear about this loss. I remember him telling us that he would break every bone in our ears, along with many other clever euphemisms that he would say. He was a good one!

I had three teachers that stood out to me in two different high schools and Mr.Edlin was one of those teachers . He made learning Chemistry fun and interesting . Some of us would visit him from time to time at the Pavilion office in the summers and he always gave us a pass to play putt putt.
I will remember him fondly as I am sure many students will.
Sending prayers and Gods’ peace to his family.

I'm deeply saddened to learn of Jim's passing. He was my favorite teacher but physics was my hardest subject! If not for his caring help I would have failed it. His smile, personal warmth and wry humor always brightened the moment... I wish I could have had him for all my classes! Rest in peace, Sir.

So saddened to hear of Edlin’s passing. One of my absolute favorite teachers in HS. He truly made Chemistry and Physics fun. To him joking about living in a tent in the woods to playing a joke making a classmate think they were color blind...all in good fun, of course. I have shared many stories about my time as his student. Thoughts and prayers to his family!
